On December 2, 2024, Ru Paré venue hosted the opening of the final exhibition for Painting 21+, an initiative that combines creativity and emotional support to foster a sense of belonging for participants. This heartwarming event was part of the Together, a Road of Hope project, and it brought together art enthusiasts, community members, and partners to celebrate the transformative power of artistic expression.
The Healing Power of Art
Painting 21+ was born in 2023 at Ru Paré and has since become a cornerstone of emotional support for its participants. Held weekly at Riekerhof, this activity provides a safe space for individuals to explore their creativity and process their emotions through art. Studies show that creative outlets like painting significantly impact mental health, helping individuals manage stress, cope with trauma, and build resilience. For the Ukrainian community, many of whom have found refuge in Amsterdam amidst the ongoing war, art has become a vital means of processing their experiences and finding a sense of stability.
According to Netherlands Government, around 136,000 newcomers from Ukraine will be residing in the Netherlands on 1 January of next year, many of whom are concentrated in major cities like Amsterdam. Initiatives like this exhibition play a crucial role in introducing newcomers into their neighborhoods, offering both a positiv visibily and a platform for connection.
Why “See You on Tuesday”?
The exhibition’s name, “See You on Tuesday,” reflects the deep emotional connection participants have developed with the weekly Painting 21+ sessions. According to Alina Bielun, coordinator of the Together project, “For the participants, Tuesday is more than just a day; it’s a time to connect with themselves and explore who they truly are. In this ever-changing world, there’s one thing we can count on: ‘See you on Tuesday!’” One participant shared, “I caught myself thinking that I was waiting for Tuesday. I’m looking forward to these drawing lessons.”
This sentiment underscores the sense of routine, safety, and self-discovery that Painting 21+ offers its attendees, making the exhibition’s title both poignant and fitting.
A Night of Art and Connection
The exhibition showcased the works of over 20 participants, presented both physically and digitally on a screen. Ukrainian DJs LEVa & gns and Pain Unlimited set the tone for the evening with their electronic music performances, while guests were treated to welcome drinks and snacks provided at the bar. Speeches by Patricia Barendregt, director of Road of Hope, and Olena Havrylenko, the volunteer instructor of Painting 21+, underscored the transformative journey of the participants and the importance of the Together Project in fostering a sense of acceptance. One attendee remarked, “It made us cry,” referring to Helena’s heartfelt speech.
Attendees admired a mural filled with inspiring phrases from participants, explored individual artworks, and watched a video installation that documented the artistic process. Representatives from the municipality and social organizations joined the celebration, emphasizing the community’s support for initiatives that promote cultural integration and emotional well-being.
A moment of honor for Ukrainian soldiers also resonated deeply with attendees, as one Ukrainian participant expressed, “Thank you for honoring our soldiers. It’s so important. I sent it to my friends in Ukraine, and they were touched that we are not forgotten.”
