A Helping Hand: Bazaar of Solidarity Lights Up Nieuw-West

On November 22, 2024, the vibrant and diverse community of Amsterdam Nieuw-West came together for the third edition of the Bazaar of Solidarity, an inspiring event organized by Road of Hope in partnership with COA (Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers) and Hulp in de Buurt. Held at Ru Paré from 9:00 to 14:00, the bazaar showcased the power of unity and collaboration, providing much-needed support for newcomers and refugees in the area.

A Community United

The event brought together individuals from many backgrounds, with participants hailing from countries such as Colombia, Venezuela, Syria, Yemen, Eritrea, and the Netherlands. It highlighted the rich cultural diversity of Amsterdam Nieuw-West, a district that has seen a significant influx of newcomers and refugees in recent years. According to municipal data, the Nieuw-West region hosts one of the largest refugee communities in Amsterdam, with an estimated 20% of its population being newcomers seeking to rebuild their lives.

Generosity in Action

The Bazaar of Solidarity was a true testament to the spirit of giving. Generous donations from community members, participants, and partner organizations made the event possible. Attendees were invited to pick up essential items, including clothing, footwear, and other necessities, without any cost.

I was able to find clothes for myself, clothes for my son, I’m very happy,” said one participant. Another attendee shared their joy: “Yesterday I saw a coat like this on the street, and I needed a coat for cold and rain so badly. And today I found this coat here. It was the universe.” Stories like these captured the heartwarming impact of the bazaar, where even the smallest gestures of kindness made a world of difference.

Collaboration for Impact

This edition of the bazaar was yet another successful collaboration between COA, which supports asylum seekers and refugees, and Hulp in de Buurt, a local organization dedicated to community welfare. Together, they coordinated a seamless event that catered to the pressing needs of the community while fostering a sense of belonging and solidarity.
